SOF® ROD is an open cell, polyethylene foam backer rod that is extruded to leave an impermeable shell that prevents moisture from entering the side. The advantage of SOF ROD is that it is very flexible and easy to install. Smaller sizes are offered to fit those really tight joints. When choosing a size, the diameter should be approximately 25% larger than the joint because of the compressibility. SOF ROD 1½" through 4" are in 6' lengths, smaller sizes are a continuous length. Do not puncture or stretch SOF ROD during application. This may cause out-gassing, which can cause blisters to form in the chinking material. In smaller joints a blunt tool may be needed to push backer further into the joint to allow the required amount of chinking. SOF ROD backer rod is the easiest type of backer rod to work with for smaller size joints.
